The Place to be Southgate

With excellent travel links into central London and a feature spread in the Metro this week, it seems like Southgate is the place to be right now. Only 20 minutes (or less) to Kings Cross from Southgate station, it’s an excellent place to be for busy commuters. Not only are there great transport links but there are so many places to eat, every corner you turn there is either a restaurant or a takeaway, you’ll never go hungry!

Putting aside modernity, the tube and the array of places to eat, Southgate still holds some of Enfield’s original charm. Formerly the South Gate to Enfield Chase, it was used as the King’s hunting grounds. This is clearly reflected in the greenery of the area, in particular Grovelands Park; a beautifully large and very green park with a boating lake. I remember going there as a kid during Autumn, getting lost within the huge trees whilst jumping around in the crunching brown leaves.

If nature’s not your thing, then don’t worry, there’s a leisure centre with a swimming pool or there are plenty of shops both along the parade and in the actual tube station. If I remember correctly some of the shops within the station are independent boutiques, selling more unique items, well worth checking out. If you’re feeling hungry along the way, there’s a traditional bagel shop directly across the road, can’t beat a fresh bagel with cream cheese and salmon… yum!

So it seems like Southgate has a bit of everything for everyone, whether you’re one with nature, the foodie or the shopaholic! If you’re passing or you just fancy a change in scenery, I’d definitely say to check out some of the restaurants and if you’ve got time some of the boutiques too.

The simple charm of having the mixture of both greenery, (large parks and fields) contrasting with the city features of a multitude of restaurants and excellent transport links harmonise together to make a lovely place to live or visit, whether it be a day out at the park or a busy day shopping followed by a yummy meal, it really does seem like Southgate is where it’s at right now.
